2016-2017 The Franklin Institute Speaker Series
December 16 – The Wright Sister: The Wright Brother imbues The Franklin Institute, from the many artifacts and notebooks that are housed in curatorial to their debut of the plane at the opening of the Franklin Air show. We celebrate their ascension into flight and teach the mechanics so inherent in their inventions. Yet tonight, we will look at another Wright, the Wright sister – Katherine Wright who was extraordinary in her own right. Harry Haskell’s new novel Maiden Flight is the true-life story of the “Wright sister,” Katharine, who left her world-famous brother Orville to marry the man she loved—the author’s grandfather and namesake. Drawing on intimate family letters, this talk will shed new light on an exceptional woman’s struggle for independence and fulfillment in the shadow of her famous brothers.
